Getting nice and sweaty from your workouts is good for your body and your skin in many ways. For example, the increase in blood flow and circulation can better transfer the needed oxygen and nutrients to your skin cells. This then pushes the toxins and impurities out through your pores, which promotes brighter, clearer skin. Working out also helps reduce physical and mental stress, which in turn reduces stress-induced breakouts. However, sweating can also lead to extra oils, acne, and more frequent breakouts if you do not adhere to a few necessary skin care precautions before, during, and after exercise.

1. Take off the Makeup

Removing your makeup before working out can help reduce bacteria buildup. Your pores open during exercise to release toxins, but they can also let in the mix of makeup and sweat on your face, which will lead to clogged pores and breakouts. If you are coming from work, bring a makeup remover with you to wipe off the day before hitting the weights. If you like to start your day with a workout, then simply wash your face with an oil-free face wash and get a move on.

2. Pull Your Hair Up and Your Hands Back

Your hair holds many natural oils that produce those healthy, sleek locks. But when coming in contact with your face, these oils can barge their ways into your skin and lead to redness, clogged pores, and breakouts. Pull your hair out of your face and make sure it stays there. Here are a few hairstyles that work for me.

You also want to be cognizant of how often you touch your hands to your face. Try to limit the amount of face-touching throughout your day in general to reduce bacteria and oil buildup. But, especially when your pores are enlarged and your hands are sweaty or dirty, keep them as far away from the face as possible in order to prevent excess dirt and oils from transferring into your pores and becoming trapped. Bring a towel with you to wipe the sweat off of your brow. Make sure to wash your towel after workouts and to bring a new one each time you set out to sweat.

3. Hit the Showers

Releasing toxins and impurities from your pores is good for your skin’s health. But, once you have sweat them out, they need to be washed off of your body and face. If not, they will settle right back into your pores and lead to oily, broken out skin. Wash your face and body as soon as possible after your workout. If you can’t take a full shower, then at least make sure to wash your face and wipe down your body with some cleansing wipes
