A hot day out in the sun calls for a cool drink in your hand. Especially on National Tequila Day!

If you are looking for a healthy alcoholic beverage this summer, choose tequila as your base. Tequila boasts a low calorie, carb, and sugar count. The natural sugar in the agave plant is also non-digestible and does not spike your blood sugar. Below are three ideal tequila-based drinks that refresh and satisfy without the mounds of sugar or calories. Keep in mind, if you do not have a cocktail shaker at home, you can use any cup or glass that seals. If you do not have a muddler, just use the back of a spoon to press the ingredients into the bottom of the glass.

Jalapeño Margarita

(Serves: 1 | Time: 5min)

This sweet and spicy cocktail makes for the perfect happy hour drink. Don’t forget to rim your cup with tajín before pouring in the goods—this will complete your perfect summer concoction.

Ingredients:

- 1 shot tequila

- 1 shot Trader Joe’s limeade

- ¼ jalapeño, diced

- ½ can of sparkling water (lime flavor works best)

- 1 lime wedge

- tajín, for rimming

- ice

Instructions:

1. Cut a quarter of a lime and rim your glass.

2. Pour some tajín onto your cutting board and flip the glass upside down so the tajín will stick to the moist rim.

3. Add ice, tequila, limeade, jalapeño, and sparkling water.

4. Squeeze the rest of your lime into the drink and stir.

Paloma

(Serves: 1 | Time: 5min)

This tequila and grapefruit cocktail tastes as refreshing as it looks. Mix together tequila, lime, and grapefruit juice and pour over ice. That tiny pinch of salt maximizes your drink’s flavor as it draws out the sweetness in the grapefruit and suppresses its bitterness.

Ingredients:

- 1 shot tequila

- 1 shot grapefruit juice

- ½ lime

- pinch of salt

- sparkling water to top off drink (grapefruit flavor works best)

- ice

Instructions:

1. Add ice, tequila, grapefruit juice, and salt into a cocktail shaker. Squeeze in the ½ lime.

2. Shake the drink so that the salt can release the sweetness in the grapefruit juice.

3. Pour into your glass and top off with sparkling water.

Cucumber Lemonade

(Serves: 1 | Time: 5min)

Cool off with a spiked lemonade as you dangle your feet into the pool. While many cocktails and alcoholic beverages can dehydrate you, this one will actually restore and replenish! The cucumbers work to hydrate your body while the mint leaves soothe inflammation and prevent swelling.

Ingredients:

- 1 shot tequila

- 1 shot Trader Joe’s Low Calorie Lemonade

- 1 Tbsp. cucumber, chopped into small chunks

- 1 tsp. fresh mint leaves (tear them slightly to open up the flavor)

- 2 orange slices

- sparkling water to top your drink off (lemon flavor works best)

- ice

Instructions:

1. In a cocktail shaker, muddle together cucumber and mint.

2. Add in ice, tequila, lemonade, and orange slices.

3. Shake and pour into your glass.

4. Top with sparkling water.
